During 1991 the Maitland Hebrew Congregational Trust was formed with the proceeds of the sale of the Shul.  This amount was approximately R345 000,00.  The original trustees were Doctor Jack Joffe, Issy Herman, Trevor Lemofsky and Charles Odes.  According to the trust deed 25% of the interest earned was to be capitalized and 75% paid out to Jewish charities and organizations.  Depending on the interest rate at the time we received approximately R30 000,00 per annum.  The trust carried on for 13 years during which time Doctor Jack Joffe and Issy Herman passed away.

In 2004 it was decided by the 3 remaining trustees (Hymie Odes was appointed a trustee) to wind up the trust.  Mr Elliot Osrin who is chairman of the Priorities Board was approached and he suggested organizations who were in need of funds.  In addition to his suggested charities we added a few extra ones and the entire capital of R427 000,00 was distributed on the 16th of November 2004.

During the 13 years of its existence the trust donated +- R390 000,00 of interest to various organizations making a grand total of R817 000,00 which we distributed in total.

In conclusion, let me add that I think the founders of the congregation would have been proud to have known that the Shul's finances were put to good use and significantly helped to assist with the less fortunate.
